वाली का सभी प्रिय खेल:-- वाली 8 वर्ष की तमिल लड़की थी। वहां किसी भी वस्तु को जानने में बहुत उत्सुक रहती थी उसका कोई खेलने वाला साथी नहीं था वह अपने घर के दरवाजे पर खड़ा रहना उसका प्रिय खेल बन चुका था वह देखती रहती थी कि गली में क्या हो रहा है इस प्रकार उसे कई नए अनुभव हो चुके थे परंतु वहां बस सवारी के प्रति अत्यधिक आकर्षित थी उसके गांव से लेकर एक समीप के कस्बे तक 1 घंटे के अंतराल में बस चलती थी।

बस से संबंधित विवरण प्राप्त करना:-- वाली बस के उन यात्रियों को गौर से देखती जो चढ़ते और उतरते थे वह अपने पड़ोसियों तथा अन्य लोगों से वार्तालाप सुनती थी जो नियमित रूप से बस का प्रयोग करते थे। अधिकतर वह उनसे प्रश्न पूछती थी। इस प्रकार से उसने बस यात्रा संबंधी काफी खुश विवरण प्राप्त कर लिया था उसके गांव से लगभग 6 मील की दूरी पर एक कस्बा था एक और का किराया भी की स्वेटर था। कस्बे तक जाने में 45 मिनट लगते थे। अथवा उसने दोपहर में 1:00 बजे चलने वाली बस लेने की योजना बनाई ताकि वह 2:45 तक घर वापस लौट सके।

बस में चढ़ना:-- 1 दिन दोपहर बाद बसंत का सुहावना दिन था दोपहर बाद वाली बस गांव से चलने ही वाली थी वाली ने पुकारा,” रुको! बस रुको!” बस की गति धीमी हो गई और कंडक्टर ने बाहर देखा उसने उसे शीघ्र ही आने को कहा। बस के बाहर खड़े हो जाते हुए वाली ने कहा कि उसे कस्बे में जाना है। उसने कुछ सिक्के भी दिखाइए और बस में चढ़ गई। कंडक्टर एक प्रसन्न चित्त पुरुष था उसने उसे एक अच्छी मैडम कहां और एक सीट की ओर इशारा किया। यह दिन में मंदी का समय था अतः बहुत कम मुसाफिर ही बस में यात्रा कर रहे थे उन विराम फिर कंडक्टर ने उससे पूछा कि क्या वह बस चलाएं। सभी यात्री कंडक्टर और वाली की ओर देख रहे थे। सीटी की आवाज सुनकर बस चल पड़ी। वह एक नई बस्ती उसके सफेद पृष्ठभूमि पर हरे रंग और पट्टियां थी सीते बहुत नरम और बेहतरीन थी।

बाहर झांकना;-- रास्ते में वाली अपनी आंखों से सभी कुछ चीजों का आनंद ले रही थी सड़क तंग थी एक और दरिया था उसमें एक तरफ नारियल के वृक्ष घास भूमि पहाड़ और आसमान और हरे खेत थे| सब कुछ देखने के लिए वह सीट पर खड़ी हो गई सभी चीजें वाली को अजूबी दिखाई देती थी एक बूढा आदमी चिल्लाया और वाली को बच्चे की आवाज लगाई। उसने उसे बैठने को कहा वाली अपने आप को बच्चा सुनकर बहुत हैरान थी ।कंडक्टर ने कहा कि वह तो प्रौढ़ मैडम है एक छोटी सी लड़की भला अकेले कैसे यात्रा कर सकती है। गुस्से में उसने कंडक्टर की ओर देखा और अपना टिकट मांगा। कंडक्टर ने उसे टिकट दे दिया। उसने उसे खड़ा ना होने के लिए कहा क्योंकि उसने एक सीट का किराया भी दिया है। बस ठहरी कुछ यात्री बड़े और वाली नीचे अपनी सीट पर बैठ गई कहीं कोई यात्री उसकी खाली सीट पर ना बैठ जाए। 

बस में एक वृद्ध महिला:-- उसी समय एक वृद्ध महिला बस में चढ़ी पूर्णविराम वह वाली के पास बैठ गई उसने वाली से पूछा कि वह अकेली है। वाली को वह अच्छी नहीं लग रही थी। उसके कानों में बड़े-बड़े सुराग थे। कानों की बालियां भी गंदी थी। वह पान सुपारी चबा रही थी। वाली को डर था कि कहीं इसका रस किसी भी क्षण गिर जाएगा उसने पुनः वाली से प्रश्न किया इसके बदले में वाली ने रोका था उत्तर दिया और उसने अपना ही कार्य करने को कह दिया। परंतु वृद्ध महिला उससे बोलती रही उसने वाली से मकान नंबर कस्बा और गली पूछना चाहा कि वह कहां जाएगी। वाली अत्यंत दुखी थी उसने उसे कहा कि उसकी चिंता करने की जरूरत नहीं है फिर वाली ने अपना मुखड़ा मोड़ लिया और खिड़की से बाहर झांकने लगी|

वाली की अत्यंत नियोजित यात्रा:_-- यह हाउस की प्रथम यात्रा थी इसने उसे बहुत प्रकार से योजनाबद्ध किया था उसने अपने सभी फालतू सिक्कों को बचा लिया था जो उसके पास आती थी। उसने अपनी खिलौने और गुब्बारे आदि के खरीदने की तीव्र इच्छा को भी दवा लिया था। गांव के मेले के अवसर पर भी उसने हिंडोले में झूले की इच्छा को नियंत्रित कर लिया था। इस प्रकार उसने अपनी यात्रा के लिए काफी धन जुटा लिया था। उसकी अगली समस्या घर से बाहर खिसकने की थी वह जानती थी कि उसकी माता जो प्रतिदिन दोपहर के भोजन के बाद एक झपकी लेती है। वाली ने उन्हें घंटों को अपनी यात्रा के प्रयोग करने का निर्णय लिया बहुत अक्सर वाली यह घंटे अपने भ्रमण के लिए ही प्रयोग करती थी।

बस में यात्रा:-- बस अब एक भूमि प्रदेश से गुजर रही थी हर वस्तु तेजी से दौड़ती सी लग रही थी पूर्णविराम परंतु बस ठीक प्रकार से सभी परेशानियों को सुरक्षित ढंग से पीछे छोड़ दी आगे बढ़ रही थी। वाली अत्यंत ही प्रसन्नता वह प्रसन्नता से अपने हाथों से तालियां बजा रही थी। वहां पर जगदीश भागती हुई एक गाय बस के सामने आ गई चालक ने अपना और तेजी से बजाया परंतु पशु और भी अधिक डरावना होता चला गया यह बस के सामने उछल पड़ा। वाली के लिए यह एक अच्छा उपहास था। अंत में गाय सड़क के रास्ते से हट गई। अब बस एक दिल धड़क चौराहे पर आई दूर से रेल तो एक धब्बे की भांति दिखाई दे रही थी पूर्णविराम गाड़ी बहुत अधिक शोर और गड़गड़ाहट के साथ वहां से गुजरी। इस ने बस को भी हिला दिया। फिर बस व्यस्त शॉपिंग की गली से गुजरी और एक छोड़ें आम रास्ते पर आ गई। वाली पूरी तरह इन सभी की ओर मंत्रमुग्ध थी और कपड़ों की प्रदर्शनी और बड़ी भीड़ को देख कर खुश थी वह हर वस्तु को देख रही थी यह बस का अंतिम पड़ाव था।

कंडक्टर द्वारा कुछ पूछताछ:-- अब सभी यात्री बस से उतर गए। वाली वहीं पर बस में बैठी रही। कंडक्टर ने वाली से पूछा कि क्या वह बस से उतरने के लिए तैयार नहीं है वाली ने उत्तर दिया कि वह इसी बात से वापस जाएगी। और 30 पैसे कंडक्टर को दे दिए। वह हैरान हो गया और उससे पूछा कि क्या मामला है। वाली ने उत्तर दिया कि उसे केवल बस में यात्रा करने की इच्छा जागृत हुई और कुछ भी बात नहीं है। कंडक्टर बहुत हंसा। उसने उसे बाहर जाकर दृश्यों को देखने के लिए कहा जब तक कि बस नहीं चलती है परंतु वाली ने उत्तर दिया कि उसे अधिक डर लगता है वह बैठी रही जब तक की बस ने अपनी वापस यात्रा आरंभ नहीं कि उसने अपना टिकट लिया। वह अद्भुत दृश्य पुन्हा उसकी आंखों के सामने थे।

मृत गाय को देखकर दुखी:-- फिर उसने अचानक एक नौजवान मरी हुई गाय को सड़क के किनारे देखा। उसने कंडक्टर से पूछा कि क्या वह वही गए हैं। कंडक्टर ने अपना सिर हिला दिया वह अब उदासी से परिपूर्ण थी गाय की यादें उसे परेशान कर रही थी उसने सोचा कि कुछ समय पहले तो यह एक प्यारा पशु था। परंतु उसका अभी आकर्षण खो गया। अब वह खिड़की से बाहर नहीं देखना चाहती थी पूर्णविराम वह अपनी सीट पर सिमट कर बैठ गई। अब 3:30 बजे थे जब बस गांव वापस पहुंची वह खड़ी हुई और कंडक्टर को कहा कि फिर पुनः मिलेंगे कंडक्टर मुस्कुराया और उत्तर दिया मैडम जब कभी भी आप बस की सवारी करना चाहो, आइए और हमें मिलिए और अपना किराया लाना मत भूलिए। वाली हंसी और दौड़ते हुए सीधे अपने घर की ओर चले गई।

 

घर पर चाची का आगमन:--अब वाली ने घर में प्रवेश किया उसने देखा कि उसकी मां उसकी किसी एक चाची से बातें कर रही थी। वह पूरी बात सुनी थी पूर्णविराम उसका मुंह कभी नहीं रुकता था। अगर एक बार उसने बातें करनी आरंभ कर दी। उसने वाली से पूछा कि वह कहां थी वाली केवल मुस्कुराई। उसकी मां उसी के साथ बातों में व्यस्त रही। दोनों ही संसार से बाहर की बातें कर रही थी। वाली ने कहा कि बहुत सी ऐसी बातें हो रही है जिनका उसे ज्ञान भी नहीं है। उसकी चाची हैरान हो गई और कहा कि वाली तो अब बड़ी औरतों की भांति बातें करती है।
